“Alumni Research Initiative”
The Associated Colleges of Illinois
For Comparing Results: Alumni Perspective
on the Public/Private College Careers, alumni research
specifically comparing graduates of Illinois’ independent
higher education institutions with those of the state’s key
public institutions. This study will implement proven
methodology already used in studies for Lutheran colleges,
and for two groups of Midwestern colleges (covering the
central and upper Midwest) and will be developed and
supervised by Hardwick Day, the research firm responsible
for these earlier projects.

“Opinion Research Corporation – Research
Project Phase II”
The National Association of Independent
Colleges & Universities
Phase II of a major research project to
assess public attitudes toward independent higher education.
Phase I surveyed the attitudes of various constituencies
throughout the nation toward independent higher education.
Researchers in Phase II aim to use 32 focus groups, located
in eight regions of the nation, to extend the research to
the use of advanced analytical techniques to measure the
“brand equity” of independent higher education. (Brand
equity is a measure of how well institutions perform on
issues that the public perceives as important to them.)
Phase II work will expand on the differences among
constituents in the various regions of the nation and test
messages that would be effective in addressing the low brand
equity of our sector. Final conclusions will greatly aid
all of independent higher education – associations, state
funds, and colleges -- in focusing our message through
“grassroots action” – in the public policy arena, in our
communities, and with the media, prospective donors, parents
and students.

“Commission on the Future of Independent
Higher Education”
Independent College Fund of New Jersey
ICFNJ will form the Commission on the Future
of Independent Higher Education in New Jersey that will
position the sector to better serve the state and its
students in the 21st century. Built upon the
success of a prior initiative in 1987, this exercise has the
potential to substantially raise the visibility of the
sector and cause an infusion of funding that will be highly
beneficial to current and future students. It also is a
collaborative venture with the state public policy
association.
