Foundation Establishes Wartburg Scholarship to Honor its Retiring President

The Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE) in Washington, D.C. will award an annual scholarship at Wartburg College to honor its retiring president, Dr. William E. Hamm, a 1966 Wartburg graduate.  The scholarship of $ 5,000 will be awarded annually to a “first opportunity student”.  The announcement was made at the Foundation’s recent annual meeting in Jersey City, NJ, when the Foundation’s fiftieth anniversary was celebrated.

One of Hamm’s notable achievements was the development of the First Opportunity Partners initiative which assists private colleges across the nation in broadening access and improving success rates for first-generation, low-income, minority and new American students. Hamm will conclude nine years as the Foundation’s president upon retiring in August.
