Collegiate Women of Color Leadership Development Institute Selected Participants

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has funded a project to prepare young, collegiate women of color as future leaders in order to increase gender and ethnic diversity in the work place.

The goal of the project is to identify collegiate women of color with leadership aptitude and provide them with opportunities to test and improve their leadership skills. The project objectives are:

• To recruit and select 50 women of color from 650
private colleges and universities who are completing their junior year of college;
• To sponsor a summer leadership institute for the
participants from Thursday, August 10 – Sunday, August 13, 2006*;
• To sponsor a mentoring program for the participants
who are matched with women mentors already in leadership
roles from September 2006 to February 2007; and
• To provide a $1,500 stipend for participants during the
senior year of college in support for implementation of
the leadership mentoring project on their campus, at a
corporation, or in their community.

* All expenses, including lodging, food, and ground transportation to and from the conference site will be covered

Project Overview

The institute will provide information on leadership theories such as servant leadership, basic skills, competencies, challenges, work/life balances, and opportunities. Leadership strategies will also be provided for serving as a minority and woman leader. Leading women leaders will serve as keynote speakers and workshop leaders so that the participants will gain first-hand experience in interacting with other leaders.  To be accepted into the institute, the women must:

• Write a one to two-page essay
• Have a 3.0 average or above at the end of their junior year of college
• Submit a transcript and two letters of reference, either from a
college professor, administrator and or community
leader/organizer
• Be a United States citizen
• Be a woman of color

The women will also perform a leadership practicum at a community, corporate, or campus agency where they will have an opportunity to start developing their leadership skills. A follow-up training stipend will be provided to the women during their senior year that will provide support while they perform the leadership practicum.  The women will write a final report/essay on lessons learned from participating in the project.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation was established in 1930 “to help people help themselves through the practical application of knowledge and resources to improve their quality of life and that of future generations.” Its programming activities center around the common vision of a world in which each person has a sense of worth; accepts responsibility for self, family, community, and societal well-being; and has the capacity to be productive, and to help create nurturing families, responsive institutions, and healthy communities.

To achieve the greatest impact, the Foundation targets its grants toward specific areas. These include: health; food systems and rural development; youth and education; and philanthropy and volunteerism. Within these areas, attention is given to exploring learning opportunities in leadership; information and communication technology; capitalizing on diversity; and social and economic community development. Grants are concentrated in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the southern African countries of Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe.
